I just looked at my field notes of March 17, 1973, Lusaka, Zambia. Stacy Tuthill took me shopping that day because I was lost, didn’t have a car then, and a few days earlier couldn’t distinguish edible from non-edible food. Stacy sorted me out. She first took pity on me, a newly arrived researcher at the rather isolated IAS (Institute for African Studies), on February 22, 1973. The irascible Jaap van Velsen was then Director of the Institute. He was a fine thinker but impossibly impractical. This note is a belated thank you. Here’s to the good memory of Stacy Tuthill's meaningful help.
Likewise, I remember meeting Madelaine Robertson March 4, 1973. At the time she was a nominated Member of Parliament of British origin who had lived in Zambia over 20 years. She knew the Luapula Province well and gave me initial insight into its fishing industry. I could have talked with her for hours. Madelaine Robertson did much to further the lot of Zambian women.
